The European Day of Languages

Day of Languages

September 26th marks International Foreign Language Day and given that both our students and Native Speakers represent a variety of nations, it’s also a special occasion for our school!

Our students and teachers worked together to create a truly global atmosphere by transforming their classrooms to reflect the decor and spirit of their chosen countries. Themed decorations, ambient music, and regional treats gave everyone a sense of being briefly transported to different parts of the world.

High school took us on a cultural tour through China, Mexico, Thailand, and regions of Southern Africa. Language was the focus, as participants eagerly practiced words and phrases in these languages, attempting to replicate the sounds of each unique language and explore new writing systems. Thai, in particular, presented a notable challenge.

Each classroom captured the spirit of its country. For example, students recreated the exotic island atmosphere of Phuket with plant-based decor, while the Mexican theme was highlighted by a display of traditional food at the entrance, complemented by traditional costumes. In the South African room, students imagined basking in the warmth of the region by gathering around a creatively constructed bonfire. Meanwhile, the first graders took us to China, where we learned how many languages are spoken in that vast country. Attendees could also sample local delicacies, including dried crickets and Mexican salsa.

We commend the students for their creativity and hard work in preparing these incredible decorations and engaging language workshops, which greatly broadened our understanding of the cultures and languages from around the world.

We are proud to be such a diverse and international school.
