Another Chess Success!
Everyone knows Regent has a strong chess team, but no one expected such a successful start to the new school year! Last year, our instructor, Dr. Krzysztof Martowicz, predicted that the “Regent players” were improving quickly and would soon achieve higher chess categories. Still, our team’s recent performance surprised even the most optimistic among us.
Chess classification tournament
On October 18 and 25, a 7-round chess classification tournament with a time control of 30 minutes per game was held at SP1. A total of 38 students participated, divided into two categories:
a) Grades 1–3 of primary school
b) Grades 4 (primary) through Grade 4 of high school.
Our school was represented by six students — three from primary school and three from high school.
In the overall tournament (and in category b), the undeniable winner was our talented sixth-grader, Krzysztof Bernas, who secured gold with six consecutive wins. With this outstanding performance, he confirmed his 3rd chess category and established his dominance among Elbląg’s primary school players.
Jakub Stasiek earned his IV category
With a fantastic score of 5.5 points (making a bronze placement within reach), Jakub Stasiek from Grade 3 of high school earned his IV category. In round 4, he posed a serious threat to the tournament champion, but in a complex situation, he was unable to seize the opportunity. This is yet another successful tournament for Jakub, who now comfortably holds the 3rd spot in our school ranking.

Regent Chess Club
Let’s recap the current chess categories held by members of the Regent Chess Club: III: Franciszek Olechnowicz, Krzysztof Bernas
IV: Jakub Jankowski, Jakub Stasiek, Adam Makowski, Maja Nicpoń
V: Aleksander Stankiewicz, Konstanty Wroński, Robert Symonowicz, Filip Rogowski, Wiktor Marosz (1st grade of primary school!)
Considering Regent’s small size, having 10 players with official categories is impressive, and this is just the start of the season!
The tournament table and photos from the event are available in our gallery.
The "Konik" Competition and Upcoming Challenges
Also worth mentioning, on October 24, eight of our students participated in the national chess problem-solving contest Konik. During the one-hour event, they tackled a set of 30 problems with varying levels of difficulty. We’ll announce the results soon, and we’re excited to share that another Regent tournament is scheduled for mid-November.
